Visit Gero Onsen – A Relaxing Hot Spring Town in the Japanese Alps

Take a Day Trip to Hida Takayama

About one hour by train, Takayama is famous for its preserved old town streets, morning markets, and Hida beef.

Explore Shirakawa-go (UNESCO World Heritage Site)

Shirakawa-go is known for its unique gassho-zukuri farmhouses.
From Gero Onsen, it takes about 2 hours by car or around 3–4 hours by public transportation (via Takayama).

How Far Is Gero Onsen from Tokyo?

Gero is easier to reach than many travelers expect.

From Tokyo:

・Take the Shinkansen to Nagoya (about 1 hour 40 minutes)
・Transfer to a limited express train to Gero (about 1 hour 30 minutes)

Total travel time is around 3.5 to 4 hours.

This makes Gero Onsen a great addition to a central Japan itinerary that includes Takayama or Shirakawa-go.
