Access from Major Cities
Echigo-Yuzawa Onsen is perhaps the most easily accessible mountain hot spring resort in Japan. Located in Niigata Prefecture, it sits right at the heart of "Snow Country" and serves as a major hub for both onsen lovers and winter sports enthusiasts.
From Tokyo (Approx. 70 to 90 minutes) — The Easiest Way
- By Train (Shinkansen): Take the Joetsu Shinkansen (Tanigawa or Toki trains) directly from Tokyo Station or Ueno Station to JR Echigo-Yuzawa Station.
- Note: This is incredibly fast and convenient. If you are visiting for skiing in winter, some Shinkansen even go one stop further to Gala Yuzawa Station, which is connected directly to a ski resort.
- By Highway Bus: Buses depart from Ikebukuro Station (East Exit) and Shinjuku (Busta Shinjuku). It takes about 3 to 3.5 hours depending on traffic.
- By Car: Take the Kan-etsu Expressway and exit at the Yuzawa IC. It is a direct 2.5 to 3-hour drive from central Tokyo.
From Niigata City (Approx. 45 to 50 minutes)
- By Train: Take the Joetsu Shinkansen from Niigata Station directly to Echigo-Yuzawa Station.
- By Car: Drive south via the Hokuriku and Kan-etsu Expressways.
From Kanazawa / Toyama
- By Train: Take the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Jōetsumyōkō Station, then transfer to the local lines or take the Shinkansen via Nagaoka.
Inside the Station: Ponshukan (Sake Museum)
One of the highlights of this onsen destination is actually located inside the Shinkansen station.
- Ponshukan: A famous shop where you can pay 500 yen to get five tokens and a small cup to taste different varieties of Niigata’s famous sake from vending machines. There is even a Sake Bath (bath with sake added to the water) inside the station complex!
Pro-Tip for Travelers: Most hotels and ryokans are located within walking distance of Echigo-Yuzawa Station (West Exit). For those slightly further away, free shuttle buses frequently circle the station, especially during the winter season. If you are staying at a ryokan, simply head to the East or West exit shuttle areas.
