What Is Shuzenji Onsen?
Shuzenji Onsen is a historic hot spring town located on the Izu Peninsula in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan.
Compared with larger hot spring resorts such as Hakone or Atami, Shuzenji is smaller and much more peaceful. The town is known for its charming riverside streets, traditional ryokan inns, and relaxing atmosphere surrounded by nature.
Because it is easily accessible from Tokyo, Shuzenji Onsen is a great destination for travelers who want to experience a traditional Japanese hot spring town without large crowds.

Stroll Through the Bamboo Forest Path
One of the most famous sights in Shuzenji is the Bamboo Forest Path.
This scenic walkway runs along a small river and is surrounded by tall bamboo trees. The atmosphere is calm and beautiful, making it a perfect place for a peaceful walk.

Visit Shuzenji Temple
The town is named after Shuzenji Temple, a historic Buddhist temple located in the center of the hot spring town.
The temple was founded in 807 by Kukai, also known as Kobo Daishi. Today, it remains an important cultural and spiritual landmark in the area.
The quiet temple grounds are a pleasant place to explore while walking through the town.
Note: Kukai (Kobo Daishi) was a famous Buddhist monk who lived about 1,200 years ago.

Tokko-no-Yu The Birthplace of Shuzenji Onsen
Another iconic spot is Tokko-no-Yu, located along the river in the center of town.
According to legend, Kukai struck a rock with a Buddhist ritual tool called a tokko, and hot spring water began flowing from the ground. This event is said to mark the beginning of Shuzenji Onsen.
Today, Tokko-no-Yu is a symbolic landmark of the town. Visitors cannot bathe there, but it remains a popular photo spot.

A Relaxing Hot Spring Experience
