Access from Major Cities

Ginzan Onsen is a breathtaking, secluded hot spring village in the mountains of Yamagata Prefecture. Its nostalgic Taisho-era atmosphere and iconic wooden ryokans make it a dream destination for travelers seeking a glimpse of old Japan.

From Tokyo (Approx. 3.5 to 4 hours)

  • By Train (Yamagata Shinkansen): Take the JR Yamagata Shinkansen "Tsubasa" directly from Tokyo Station to JR Oishida Station.
    • Note: From Oishida Station, take the "Oishida-Ginzan Line" bus (approx. 40 minutes) to reach the entrance of the onsen town.
  • By Air: Fly from Haneda Airport to Yamagata Airport (approx. 1 hour).
    • From the Airport: Take the "Oishida-Ginzan Sharyo" (airport shuttle bus) which takes you directly to Ginzan Onsen in about 60–80 minutes (reservation recommended).
  • By Car: Take the Tohoku Expressway and exit at the Murayama IC. From there, it is about a 30-to-40-minute drive.

From Sendai (Approx. 2 to 3 hours)

  • By Bus: Take a highway bus from Sendai Station to the Obanazawa Bus Stop, then transfer to a local bus for Ginzan Onsen.
  • By Train: Take the JR Senzan Line to Yamagata Station, then transfer to the JR Ou Main Line (or Shinkansen) to Oishida Station.

Pro-Tip for Travelers: To preserve its historic atmosphere, private cars are not allowed inside the main village area. If you arrive by car, you must use the designated parking lots on the outskirts. Most ryokans offer free shuttle services from Oishida Station for their guests—be sure to book this in advance! Also, winter is the peak season, so bus schedules can be affected by heavy snow; always allow extra travel time.
