Access from Major Cities

Matsunoyama Onsen is a hidden gem tucked away in the mountains of Niigata Prefecture. Known as one of Japan’s "Top Three Medicinal Hot Springs," it offers a nostalgic atmosphere and deep snow in the winter.

From Tokyo (Approx. 2.5 to 3 hours)

By Train (Fastest Way): Take the Joetsu Shinkansen (Bullet Train) from Tokyo Station to Echigo-Yuzawa Station. From there, transfer to the Hokuhoku Line and get off at Matsudai Station.
- Note: From Matsudai Station, it is about a 20-minute bus or taxi ride to the Matsunoyama Onsen town.
By Car: Take the Kan-etsu Expressway. Exit at the Shiozawa-Ishiuchi IC. From the exit, it is about an hour-long scenic drive through the mountains (Route 353).

From Niigata City (Approx. 2 hours)

By Train: Take the Joetsu Shinkansen or a local express train to Echigo-Yuzawa Station, then follow the same steps above (transfer to the Hokuhoku Line).
By Car: Take the Kan-etsu Expressway south to the Echigo-Kawaguchi IC, then follow Route 117 and local roads toward Matsunoyama.

Pro-Tip for Travelers: During winter (December to March), this area receives some of the heaviest snowfall in Japan. If you are visiting by car, winter tires are mandatory. For those taking the bus from Matsudai Station, please check the bus schedule in advance, as departures are limited. Many ryokans also offer private shuttle pickups for staying guests!
