Estimated travel time and cost from major cities.

From Tokyo

  • Kusatsu:Good. Approx. 2.5 hours via Limited Express "Kusatsu-Shima" from Ueno, or approx. 4 hours via highway bus from Shinjuku.  
  • Gero:Fair. Approx. 2.5–3 hours via Shinkansen to Nagoya + Limited Express "Hida".  
  • Arima:Far. Approx. 3.5–4 hours via Shinkansen to Shin-Kobe/Shin-Osaka + Bus.  

From Osaka / Kobe

  • Arima: ◎ Excellent. Approx. 1 hour from Osaka or 30 mins from Sannomiya by bus. Perfect for day trips.  
  • Gero:Good. Approx. 3.5 hours via Shin-Osaka to Nagoya + Train. Direct trains from Osaka are also available.  
  • Kusatsu: × Difficult. Takes 5–6 hours involving Shinkansen and trains/buses via Tokyo or Kanazawa/Karuizawa.  

From Nagoya

  • Gero: ◎ Excellent. Approx. 1.5 hours via Limited Express "Hida". A standard weekend trip destination.  
  • Arima:Good. Under 2 hours via Shinkansen + Bus.  
  • Kusatsu:Very Far. Requires traveling via Nagano or Tokyo. Highway buses can take very long (up to 12 hours).  

Chapter 4 : Take-home Experiences

Kusatsu Onsen

  • Specialties: Onsen Manju (steamed buns - shops often hand out samples), Yunohana (bath salts).
  • Style: Eating while walking around the "Yubatake" is the main style. Yakitori and Onsen Tamago (soft-boiled eggs) are popular.

Arima Onsen

  • Specialties: Tansan Senbei (Carbonated Crackers - "Raw" crackers with a 5-second shelf life are a hit). Arima Cider. Traditional crafts like Doll Brushes (Ningyo-fude) and Basketry.
  • Style: Food culture utilizing carbonated spring water. Dishes using Japanese pepper (Arima Sansho) are also famous.

Gero Onsen

  • Specialties: Gero Pudding and other sweets, Kei-chan (local chicken dish). Onsen Mist (facial spray).  
  • Style: The "Bare Skin Beauty" project has led to a surge in sweets shops targeting young women. Frog-themed goods are abundant.

  • For those who want to "Cure" body and mind with intense power: 👉 Go to Kusatsu Onsen. The stimulating acidic water and the overwhelming energy of the Yubatake await.
  • For those who want "Rest" in luxury ryokans and enjoy gourmet food: 👉 Go to Arima Onsen. Enjoy the luxury of comparing Gold & Silver springs with easy access from Kobe/Osaka.
  • For those who want smooth skin and "Entertainment" with street food: 👉 Go to Gero Onsen. The gentle water and pop-culture atmosphere are perfect for girls' trips, couples, and families.
