Chapter 3 : Kansai & Kinki Area: The Sea Dyed by the Sunset

The ocean view in Kansai is an interesting area with a contrast between the calm scenery of the Seto Inland Sea and the dynamic scenery of the Pacific Ocean.

3.1. Wakayama Prefecture: Famous Hot Springs on the Sunset Line

  • Kyukamura Kishu Kada: The "Tenku no Yu" (Sky Bath) on a hill overlooking the Kitan Strait offers a truly superb view. Although the sunset time is breathtakingly beautiful, be aware that day-trip bathing is limited to daytime (12:00-15:50). Staying overnight is recommended to have the sunset to yourself.
  • Nanki Shirahama Onsen Saki-no-Yu: A historic hot spring basin that has existed since ancient times. It is a wild open-air bath so close to the sea that waves crashing against the rocks might splash you. The affordability of the 500-yen bathing fee is also an attraction.

3.2. Hyogo Prefecture/Ako Onsen: Mirror World of Setouchi

  • Ginpaso: Utilizing the calm waves of the Seto Inland Sea, it realizes an infinity bath where the water surface and the sea surface completely merge. The view selected as one of the "100 Best Sunsets in Japan" is like a painting. Since day-trip bathing (from 1,800 yen) is popular, it is better to make a reservation or check congestion status in advance.

Chapter 4 : Hokuriku & San'in Area: The Power and Healing of the Sea of Japan

Hot springs on the Sea of Japan side often have water containing "salt" that warms the body well, showing completely different expressions depending on the season: blue sea in summer and rough waves in winter.

4.1. Tottori Prefecture/Kaike Onsen: Seaside Source

  • Kaike Yugetsu: A high-end inn where all guest rooms have terrace open-air baths. From the Infinity Sky Open-air Bath on the 7th floor, you can see the fishing fires (isaribi) illuminating the sea at night, wrapped in a fantastic atmosphere.
  • Day Trip Onsen Ocean: A large-scale facility imaged after a resort in Bali. It has one of the largest open-air baths in the Chugoku region and is open until midnight, making it perfect for ending your sightseeing trip.

4.2. Niigata Prefecture/Senami Onsen: Grand Theater of Sunset

  • Taikanso Senami no Yu: From inns lined up along the coastline like Taikanso, you can overlook the sunset sinking into the Sea of Japan. This area cherishes the "sunset" itself as a tourism resource, and the views from the lobbies and open-air baths are special seats.
