What Is Echigo-Yuzawa Onsen?

Echigo-Yuzawa Onsen is a popular hot spring resort located in Niigata Prefecture, Japan.

One of its biggest advantages is its easy access from Tokyo. You can reach Echigo-Yuzawa in about 70–90 minutes by Joetsu Shinkansen, making it one of the most convenient onsen destinations for travelers.

The area is famous for its relaxing hot springs, beautiful mountain scenery, and excellent ski resorts in winter. Because of this, Echigo-Yuzawa is a popular destination for both Japanese visitors and international travelers looking to experience Japan’s snowy countryside.

The region is also known as the setting of the famous novel Snow Country written by Yasunari Kawabata, a Nobel Prize–winning author.

Enjoy Skiing in Winter

One of the most popular ski resorts in the area is GALA Yuzawa Snow Resort. During the winter season, some Joetsu Shinkansen trains run directly to GALA-Yuzawa Station, which is located right next to the ski resort.
If your train stops at Echigo-Yuzawa Station instead, you can still reach the resort easily. Free shuttle buses run frequently between the station and the ski resort, and the ride takes about 10 minutes.

Niigata is one of Japan’s top sake-producing regions. At Ponshukan, you can try more than 100 different types of sake using a coin-operated tasting system.
