Access from Major Cities

Hanamaki Onsen is a premier hot spring resort in Iwate Prefecture, surrounded by lush nature and famous for its association with the legendary writer Kenji Miyazawa. It is exceptionally well-connected by bullet train and air, making it a convenient gateway to Northern Japan.

From Tokyo (Approx. 3 hours)

  • By Train (Shinkansen): Take the Tohoku Shinkansen from Tokyo Station to JR Shin-Hanamaki Station.
    • Note: The fastest "Hayabusa" or "Yamabiko" trains take about 2.5 to 3 hours.
  • From the Station to the Onsen:
    • Free Shuttle Bus: Most major hotels in Hanamaki Onsen offer a free shuttle service from Shin-Hanamaki Station (approx. 20–30 minutes).
    • Taxi: A taxi ride takes about 20 minutes (approx. 4,000 yen).
  • By Car: Take the Tohoku Expressway and exit at the Hanamaki IC. The onsen resort is just a 5-minute drive from the exit.

From Sendai (Approx. 1 to 1.5 hours)

  • By Train: Take the Tohoku Shinkansen from Sendai Station to Shin-Hanamaki Station (approx. 1 hour).
  • By Car: Drive north via the Tohoku Expressway. It takes about 1.5 hours.

From Sapporo / Osaka / Nagoya (By Air)

  • By Air: Fly into Iwate Hanamaki Airport.
    • From the Airport: It is incredibly close! A taxi or rental car will get you to the onsen in just 15 minutes. Some hotels also provide shuttle pickups from the airport.

Pro-Tip for Travelers: Please note the difference between Hanamaki Station (local line) and Shin-Hanamaki Station (Shinkansen). While shuttle buses serve both, the Shinkansen station is where most long-distance travelers arrive. If you stay at the "Hanamaki Onsen" hotel complex, be sure to visit their Rose Garden, which features over 6,000 roses and is beautifully illuminated at night!
