Access from Major Cities

Amakusa Shimoda Onsen is a historic hot spring resort on the western coast of the Amakusa Islands in Kumamoto Prefecture. Famous for its high-quality clear water and breathtaking sunsets over the East China Sea, it is a hidden sanctuary for those seeking peace and fresh seafood.

From Kumamoto City (Approx. 2.5 to 3 hours)

  • By Bus (Amakusa Airline & Sanko Bus): Take the "Amakusa-go" Rapid Bus from Kumamoto Sakura Machi Bus Terminal or JR Kumamoto Station to Hondo Bus Center. From Hondo, transfer to a local bus bound for "Shimoda Onsen."
  • By Car: Drive from central Kumamoto via the Amakusa Pearl Line (Route 266/324). It is a beautiful drive across several major bridges connecting the islands. It takes about 2.5 hours.

From Fukuoka (Approx. 3 to 3.5 hours)

  • By Air (Fastest Way): Fly from Fukuoka Airport to Amakusa Airport via Amakusa Airlines (AMX). The flight takes only 35 minutes.
    • From the Airport: Take a taxi or rental car to Shimoda Onsen (approx. 30–40 minutes).
  • By Car: Take the Kyushu Expressway to the Matsubase IC, then follow the coastal roads (Route 266) toward Amakusa.

From Nagasaki (By Ferry)

  • By Ferry & Car: Take the ferry from Kuchinotsu Port (Shimabara Peninsula) to Oniike Port (Amakusa). The ferry ride is about 30 minutes, followed by a 40-minute drive to Shimoda Onsen.

Pro-Tip for Travelers: Shimoda Onsen is a quiet, traditional village. If you are using the bus from Hondo Bus Center, be sure to check the timetable in advance as services are limited. Most ryokans offer free shuttle pickups from the Shimoda Onsen bus stop. This area is also famous for Dolphin Watching tours nearby—ask your hotel to help you book a morning tour!
