Access from Major Cities
Gero Onsen, ranked as one of Japan's "Top Three Springs," is famous for its "Smooth Skin Water." Located in the scenic Hida region of Gifu Prefecture, it is a perfect stop between the modern city of Nagoya and the historic streets of Takayama.
From Nagoya (Approx. 1.5 to 2 hours)
- By Train (Direct - Most Popular): Take the JR Limited Express "Hida" from Nagoya Station directly to Gero Station.
- Tip: The train follows the Hida River, offering spectacular valley views. Sit on the right side when heading from Nagoya for the best scenery!
- By Bus: A direct "Gero Onsen Direct Bus" operates daily from Nagoya Station (Shinkansen Side). It is much cheaper than the train but requires a reservation.
- By Car: Take the Tokai-Kanjo Expressway to the Tomika-Sekiguchi IC, then follow Route 41 north. It takes about 2 hours.
From Takayama (Approx. 45 to 60 minutes)
- By Train: Take the JR Limited Express "Hida" (approx. 45 mins) or a local train (approx. 60 mins) from Takayama Station to Gero Station.
- By Car: Drive south via Route 41. It is a straightforward 1-hour drive.
From Tokyo (Approx. 3.5 to 4 hours)
- By Shinkansen & Train: Take the Tokaido Shinkansen to Nagoya Station, then transfer to the Limited Express "Hida" as mentioned above.
Pro-Tip for Travelers: Gero Onsen is very compact and easy to explore on foot. Gero Station is right next to the hot spring district. Most major ryokans have shuttle vans waiting at the station to coincide with the arrival of the Limited Express "Hida." Also, don't miss the "Funsenchi", a famous large stone-lined outdoor bath right by the river (please note that swimwear is required here)!
