Access from Major Cities

Aizu Ashinomaki Onsen is a dramatic hot spring resort perched above a deep river gorge. It serves as a perfect base for exploring the historic samurai city of Aizu-Wakamatsu and the thatched-roof village of Ouchi-juku.

From Tokyo (Approx. 3.5 to 4 hours)

  • By Train (Shinkansen + Local Train):
    1. Take the Tohoku Shinkansen from Tokyo Station to JR Koriyama Station (approx. 80 mins).
    2. Transfer to the JR Ban-etsu West Line to Aizu-Wakamatsu Station (approx. 65 mins).
    3. Transfer to the Aizu Railway and get off at Ashinomaki-Onsen Station (approx. 20 mins).
  • By Tobu Limited Express (Scenic Route): Take the Limited Express "Revaty Aizu" from Tobu Asakusa Station directly to the Aizu Railway line (transfers may occur at Aizu-Tajima). This route is longer but very scenic.
  • By Car: Take the Tohoku Expressway to the Koriyama JCT, then the Ban-etsu Expressway to the Aizu-Wakamatsu IC. From there, it is about a 25-minute drive via Route 121.

From Sendai (Approx. 2.5 hours)

  • By Train: Take the Tohoku Shinkansen to Koriyama, then follow the same train route via Aizu-Wakamatsu.
  • By Highway Bus: A direct highway bus runs from Sendai Station to Aizu-Wakamatsu Station, then you can use the Aizu Railway.

Key Highlights: Cats and Architecture

  • Ashinomaki-Onsen Station: Famous for its "Cat Station Master." While you can't take photos of the cats (to protect their eyes), you can meet them and buy adorable cat-themed souvenirs.
  • Ookawa-so (Ryokan): This famous inn features a stunning floating stage in its lobby where a shamisen is played. It became a viral sensation among fans for its striking resemblance to the "Infinity Castle" in Demon Slayer.
  • Ouchi-juku: This ancient post town with thatched roofs is only a 20-minute drive or a short bus/taxi ride away.

Pro-Tip for Travelers: Ashinomaki-Onsen Station is actually located about 4 km away from the main hot spring village. Important: There is no public bus from the station to the hotels. However, almost all ryokans provide a free shuttle bus to meet the arrival of the Aizu Railway trains (advance reservation is usually required). If you forget to book, you will likely need to call a taxi from the station.
