What Is Kurokawa Onsen?
Kurokawa Onsen is a small hot spring town located in the mountains of Kumamoto Prefecture, near the Aso area in Kyushu.
Unlike larger and more commercial hot spring resorts, Kurokawa Onsen is known for its peaceful atmosphere, traditional ryokan, and beautiful natural surroundings.
The entire town has a unified design concept — wooden signs, traditional buildings, and no large neon lights. It feels like stepping into a quiet, nostalgic Japan.

What Makes Kurokawa Onsen Special?
Outdoor Bath Hopping (Rotenburo Meguri)
One of the most unique experiences in Kurokawa Onsen is “Rotenburo Meguri” — hot spring hopping.
By purchasing a special wooden pass called a Nyuto Tegata, visitors can enjoy outdoor baths at three different ryokan (traditional inns) of their choice. Instead of staying at just one bath, you can explore multiple hot springs scattered throughout the charming town.
Each bath has its own personality. Some are surrounded by deep forest, where you can soak while listening to birds and rustling leaves. Others are located beside a quiet river, offering the calming sound of flowing water. You may also find dramatic rock baths built into natural stone landscapes.
What makes Kurokawa truly special is that the entire town feels like one large open-air hot spring resort. Walking between baths along lantern-lit streets creates a peaceful and almost magical atmosphere.
It’s not just about bathing — it’s about wandering slowly, discovering hidden corners, and immersing yourself in nature and tradition.
