Access from Major Cities

Unazuki Onsen is the largest hot spring resort in Toyama Prefecture, serving as the gateway to the spectacular Kurobe Gorge. It is famous for having some of the clearest hot spring water in Japan and for its breathtaking views of the emerald-green Kurobe River.

From Tokyo (Approx. 2.5 to 3 hours)

  • By Train (Shinkansen & Local):
    1. Take the Hokuriku Shinkansen from Tokyo Station to Kurobe-Unazukionsen Station (approx. 2 hours 15 mins).
    2. Walk a few steps to the adjacent Shin-Kurobe Station (Toyama Chihou Railway).
    3. Take the local train to Unazuki Onsen Station (approx. 25 minutes).
  • By Car: Take the Kan-etsu and Hokuriku Expressways. Exit at the Kurobe IC. It is about a 5-hour drive from Tokyo.

From Kanazawa (Approx. 1 hour)

  • By Train: Take the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Kurobe-Unazukionsen Station (approx. 35 mins), then transfer to the local Toyama Chihou Railway as mentioned above.
  • By Car: Take the Hokuriku Expressway to the Kurobe IC. It takes about 1 hour.

From Toyama City (Approx. 1 hour)

  • By Train: Take the Toyama Chihou Railway (Limited Express) directly from Dentetsu-Toyama Station (next to JR Toyama Station) to Unazuki Onsen Station.

The Kurobe Gorge Railway (Torokko Ressha)

Many visitors come to Unazuki specifically for the Kurobe Gorge Railway.

  • The departure station, Unazuki Station, is just a 5-minute walk from the Unazuki Onsen town.
  • This open-air trolley train takes you deep into the mountains through tunnels and over bright red bridges. It is especially popular during the autumn foliage season (late October to early November).

Pro-Tip for Travelers: Please note that there are two "Unazuki" stations: Unazuki Onsen Station (for the town and hotels) and Unazuki Station (for the Gorge Railway). They are very close to each other. Most ryokans in the area are within walking distance of the station, but almost all offer a free shuttle pickup if you have heavy luggage. Just look for the staff holding hotel signs outside the ticket gate!
